With the festive season upon us and businesses planning their work parties, there are some important factors employer’s need to consider. The employee’s safety and well-being should be at the forefront of everything when organising these events.
As most Christmas parties occur outside of normal working hours, it should be made clear to employees about what is expected of them. They should know which behaviours are acceptable and the procedures which will be applied should any misconduct occur. If any allegations are made during or after the event, then the organisation’s usual disciplinary process should be followed. While it’s important for workers to enjoy themselves at these gatherings, they still need to act in accordance with the organisation’s regular rules and procedures.
All employees should be invited to the work event, however it needs to be remembered that Christmas is not celebrated by everyone, so employees shouldn’t feel compelled or forced to participate. Managers should also make sure that decorations in the workplace do not present a fire hazard.
With food and drink being a big part of Christmas parties, any dietary requirements will need to be accommodated for. Additionally, not everyone drinks alcohol, so there needs to be plenty of options for everyone. At the end of the event, employers should make sure that everyone gets home safely, and no one is driving over the limit. If employees have had an alcoholic drink, insist they get a taxi or a lift home.
Finally, it’s important to have fun and enjoy the holiday season. This is a time to get together and laugh with friends and colleagues. Happy Holidays from RBHR!
